Germany Day

Image
We had such an amazing day today looking at Germany and aspects of its culture. Firstly, it was great to see how we had all made an effort to try and come to school dressed in the colours of the German flag so we took the opportunity to get a whole class photo as well as smaller group photos so that we could see everyone properly. Then as you can see below, we started the day by taking the important opportunity of looking at the different cultures and languages that are spoken in our classroom. As this group are demonstrating, they came up to the map of Europe and identified Poland to show everyone where it was on the map and then we discussed whether they were born there, whether they speak their home language solely at home, English or a mixture of the two. It was a fascinating discussion and we learnt lots about the diversity within our class. It was then onto Germany, where we all coloured in a German flag to go on our new Germany display and then revised and lear

International Cultural Day

Image
This Friday (22nd), we` are holding an International Cultural Day. We are going off timetable and spending the day exploring lots of different aspects of the country that has been chosen for our class/year group. Each class/year group has chosen a different country so that we are covering a whole range of cultural activities across the school. We would therefore like the children to come in non-school uniform. It would be fantastic if the children could come in wearing some of the colours from the flag for their chosen country. However, we don’t want you to feel any pressure if your child does not own any items of clothing for these colours and would encourage you to send your child in any colours to reflect the vibrancy of cultures we are celebrating across the school.   In Year 4, we have chosen Germany. Here is the German flag. We look forward to sharing some photos of what we get up to next Friday with you via our blog and year group page so keep a look out for those. Lastly, t

Digestive System

Image
On Friday, we demonstrated how the human digestive system works with the use of some bread, water, lemon juice and washing up liquid as well as a sandwich bag and a pair of tights! In our groups, we had a go at ripping the bread into pieces with our hands to demonstrate the job of the teeth and placed the bits of bread into a sandwich bag. Then, we began mashing it with our hands and adding some water, lemon juice and washing up liquid to perform some more mashing. (The water was acting as the saliva and the lemon juice and washing up liquid were acting as the acid and enzymes that help to break our food down.  Afterwards, we handed it over to Mrs Hurst as it got quite messy from here on out! We gathered around the demonstration table and watched as each group came and squeezed the masticated bread into the pair of tights. Poor Mrs Hurst ended up with quite a lot of it on her hands!   Then it was completely over to Mrs Hurst to demonstrate the job of the small and large intestine. Here
